Molecule of the Week: Dimethyl ether
二甲醚(DME)又称甲醚,是最简单的脂肪醚。二甲醚是一种无色气体。二甲醚目前主要由甲醇脱水来生产制备;不过,研究人员们也正在着眼于利用生物甲烷或从纤维素或木质素中获取的生物质进行二甲醚的可持续性生产。
二甲醚主要用于制备其他小分子,如醋酸或硫酸二甲酯。它也是一种喷雾罐推进剂和替代氯氟烃的制冷剂。二甲醚被认为是一种比碳氢化合物更清洁的燃料。
二甲醚除了存在于地球上,最近的一项重大发现报道了其也存在于外太空。今年3月,荷兰莱顿大学(Leiden University)的研究人员借助阿塔卡马大型毫米/亚毫米波阵列望远镜(ALMA),于距离地球444光年的蛇夫座(Ophiuchus)行星形成盘中发现了二甲醚。二甲醚包含9个原子,是迄今为止在太空中观测到的最大分子。

Dimethyl ether (DME), a colorless gas, is the simplest aliphatic ether. Also called methyl ether, it is currently produced by dehydrating methanol; but researchers have an eye on it for sustainable production from biogenic methane or biomass derived from cellulose or lignin.
DME is primarily used to make other small molecules such as acetic acid or dimethyl sulfate. It is also a spray-can propellant and a refrigerant to replace chlorofluorocarbons. It has been proposed as a cleaner-burning fuel than hydrocarbons.
Far beyond its terrestrial presence, DME was a significant recent discovery in outer space. In March, researchers at Leiden University (the Netherlands) used the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array telescope to identify the molecule in a planet-forming disc in the constellation Ophiuchus, 444 light-years from Earth. With nine atoms, DME is the largest molecule yet observed in space.
Sertraline continues to be a frequently prescribed antidepressant. But its success has come with an environmental cost: This year, a review by South African scientists Lawrence Mzukisi Madikizela* and Somandla Ncubeb cited dozens of drugs, including sertraline, that have been detected in marine organisms and seafood. This finding is a major concern for ocean life because of the aquatic toxicity statements shown in the hazard information table.
Always optimistic, some astrobiologists have speculated that the presence of DME could be an indicator of life “out there”.
